About Me

Welcome to Culm Valley Chair Caning.
Here's a little bit about me and my cane weaving background.
As a child I really enjoyed doing arts and crafts. If it required an eye for detail, I'd try it, knitting, sewing, macrame, detailed art etc but, like many little girls, my strongest passion was for horses and I've spent most of my working life within the equestrian industry until my mid 40's when that passion was finally washed away by the British rain.
Back in 1982 when I was 14, my mother was earning a living doing upholstery and caning. She had acquired a rectangle stool that needed a new cane seat and I asked her to teach me, so that was my first caning project and my mum still has that stool today. From then on I would take on every opportunity to re-cane more chairs, learning different patterns and techniques. For many years chair caning was a hobby that I did in the evenings after a day working at a stables. I caned chairs for friends of friends and word of mouth but didn't believe I could do it full time. Things changed around 2010 when a friend of mine rescued a handsome carver chair from a recycling centre with a damaged cane seat and back. She didn't know I could weave cane until I offered to fix her chair. When I returned the completed chair to her she said "That's great! You should be earning a living doing this", so caning then became a 'paying hobby' and it grew from there.
Today, with over 40 years experience, cane and rush weaving is now my full time business. I work at home in my cosy little workshop at the end of my garden.
It gives me great pleasure to see the joy on a customer's face when their family heirloom or sentimental chair is returned looking beautiful and useable.
